SHIRLEY
Jowers developed the communication strategy for and executed launch of the Shirley impact campaign, which was tied to the Participant and Royal Ties-produced film, SHIRLEY, now available on Netflix.
SHIRLEY tells the story of the first Black congresswoman and political icon, Shirley Chisholm, and her trailblazing run for president of the U.S. It chronicles her audacious, boundary-breaking 1972 presidential campaign.
In partnership with Netflix, the filmmakers and the Shirley Chisholm Project, amplified Shirley Chisholm’s legacy as a trailblazing political icon, advocate, educator, and caregiver whose unapologetic determination advanced progress for racial and gender equity.
The campaign partnered with Representative Barbara Lee to hold a special screening of the film in Washington, D.C. at the National Museum of African American History & Culture. The campaign held a private viewing of the Congresswoman’s archive at the Library of Congress for talent, including Regina and Reina King. There, talent was able to access a private tour and meet and speak with Members of Congress, including Leader Rep. Hakeem Jeffries and Rep. Steven Horsford. Jowers secured an op-ed in Elle Magazine, bylined by Rep. Lee, and a New Yorker interview with Regina King. Jowers also produced a recorded conversation between Rep. Lee and Christina Jackson, who plays her in the film, during production, which she landed exclusively with Essence Magazine around launch. Jowers also secured a partnership with the Museum of the City of New York to feature one of the costumes from the film in the museum’s exhibit dedicated to the Congresswoman for her 100th birthday.
